About SANGINI...... is a minority led women’s health organisation. It was set up five years ago by a group of women who identified a gap in the area of health and looked for ways to raise awareness about it. It soon emerged that it can play a crucial role in developing a sustainable infrastructure for social cohesion through participation and education. As a multi-cultural organisation, the emphasis was also on promoting multi-cultural arts and cultural activities. Sangini is unique, in that it aims to reach Black Minority Ethnic women (including asylum seekers and refugees) and other excluded women in an innovative and creative way whilst providing opportunities for tackling inequalities in health. The activities range from the arts and include dance, music and creative writing to culturally diverse approaches to ‘well-being’ such as aromatherapy, meditation and yoga. One of Sangini’s first projects Sehat (meaning health) had a profound impact on the lives of 20 isolated, culturally diverse young women. Its aim was to explore issues surrounding depression and a sense of isolation among young Asian women in Hendon and young indigenous women in Southwick by using artistic means such as creative writing and drawing. The project raised awareness of different cultures and to empower the women to think positively about their health with clear impact on their families. The work from this project was exhibited at The Museum & Winter Gardens. In the first three years Sangini worked with over 2,000 women through a wide range of activities and initiatives. Sangini now has over 200 members from Sunderland and across the region diverse cultural backgrounds, including: South Asians, Afghans, Angolan, Congolese Iraqis, Iranians, Chinese, Phillipinos, Zimbabweans, White British and Black British. |
